Box Office: "The Hobbit" Expected To Stay On Top
Showing some staying-power, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is once again on track to take the top spot at the box office for the weekend of December 21-23, 2012.
The Peter Jackson-directed tale of Bilbo Baggins earned a Friday total of $10.5 million, and looks for a $31.5 million weekend.
The newly released “Jack Reacher” grabbed $5.7 million in Friday sales to take the second slot. The Tom Cruise thriller is expected to take in a respectable $17.5 million for its first weekend in theaters.
Rounding out the box office in expected weekend earnings are Universal’s “This is 40” ($12 million) in third, followed by Dreamworks Animation’s “Rise of the Guardians” ($7.2 million) in fourth, and Disney Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc. 3D” ($5 million) in fifth.
