5 Fashion and Beauty Resolutions for 2013
The start of a new year is a great time to wipe the slate clean and kick off a new era with better habits and fresh ambitions. Anything can happen in 2013 — get excited!
To help you make 2013 your greatest sartorial year yet, I’ve listed a few New Year’s resolutions that are perfect for any college girl — no matter where you fall on the style scale. Check out our five fashion and beauty resolutions, and be sure to leave a comment and tell us your 2013 resolutions!
1. Wear at least one spectacular outfit a week.
During the busy school year, it’s easy to rush while getting ready and end up wearing something, well, mediocre. It’s probably impossible to come up with something lookbook-worthy every single day, but we owe it to our closets to wear at least one magnificent outfit a week!
Check out street style blogs, Pinterest, and CF for a little bit of style inspiration, and save any pictures that get you really inspired. From this point, it’s easy to flip through these photos before you go to bed and pick out an outfit you can recreate the next day.
Another trick I use is to write down any good outfit ideas that randomly come to me. I actually have a note on my iPhone dedicated to these ensembles! It’s a great resource to have when you’re feeling less than creative. For more on putting together awe-inspiring outfits for regular days of the week, check out our post on the subject!
2. Wash off your makeup before bed!

We’ve all been there — you get home late from a night on the town or a marathon study session. You know you should wash off your foundation and mascara before you go to sleep, but first you flip on the TV and wiggle your toes out of those high-heeled boots. Then, you peel off your stiff skinny jeans and pull on a loose pair of flannel PJ pants. Ahhhhh. Although you had every intention of polishing your pearly whites and exfoliating, before you know it, you’ve face-planted in bed.
I am probably the worst person in the world about washing off my makeup before bed. I try to make ridiculous justifications about it, but for me, this is just my laziness at its finest. I know I don’t need to explain why it’s awful for the delicate skin on your face to be covered by makeup over a long period of time. If that isn’t enough to get you to the sink, think about how hard it is to get makeup stains off of pillowcases!
Although washing your face and applying moisturizer is the best route, I like to keep makeup remover pads in my bathroom as well for the nights when I’m super exhausted and just need a quick fix. Trust me — when you have glowing, supple skin around the time when your peers start to get fine lines on their face, your body will thank you for that extra bit of effort!
3. Take great care of what you already have.

There’s a certain sense of pride you get when you put forth extra effort to keep your wardrobe in tip-top shape. While you have a little extra time on your hands over winter break, take a moment to examine what you have and fix anything that needs attention. Reinforce any loose buttons on coats or cardigans. Get that pair of pants hemmed. Run a razor blade or fabric shaver over any pants, tops, or sweaters that have begun to pill. Steam-clean or iron your dress shirts. Treat your leather shoes and purses.
Although these small actions can feel like a pain in the butt, they’ll do wonders to maintain the life of your wardrobe. Personally, I believe that there are blessings and good karma in taking pride in the things that you already have. Plus, you’ll be thankful in the long run when you get to look into a closet full of clothes in excellent condition.
4. Make wise fashion investments.

We’ve all fallen victim to the oh-so infamous impulse purchase. If I could magically recoup even a fraction of the money that I’ve carelessly spent on cheap clothes or movies in the $5 bin, I’d probably have enough to buy a designer purse, a pair of Louboutins, and then some!
The key to not blowing your cash on clothes you don’t need is to plan, plan, and plan! Take inventory of what you already have in your closet, note anything you need to fill in any gaps in your wardrobe, and list a few special items that you want to make your closet unique to you. Keep this list somewhere you can access it anytime — I keep a running list of fashion needs and wants in my cell phone, so I’ll always have it with me when I shop. Scrawled on a piece of paper and stored in your wallet would work, too!
Next, be sure to stick to the plan that you’ve laid out for yourself. Whether you follow the cost per wear ideology, or are just saving up to splurge on an “it” item, you’ll feel amazing when the fruits of your labor finally pay off.
5. Take risks.

We’re young girls about town, in the prime of our life – there’s no better time to experiment with fun makeup tricks or new style aesthetics. Why not try blue eyeliner or hot pink lipstick? Why not wear a bright pair of combat boots with a dress? Why not try a sequined blazer, a patterned pair of leggings, or a vintage-style hat?
True style is about being gutsy and willing to take a few missteps in the name of art. This year, test out a few trends that seem a little out there. You never know, you just might find a few pieces (or beauty looks) that you absolutely love!
What Do You Think?
